  32. According to the book, "Lea, New Mexico's Last Frontier"; by Gil Hinshaw, published by the Hobbs Daily News-Sun, Charles Wesley Justis was raised on a Virginia Plantation to be a proper southern gentleman. He was an accomplished musician. (Taken from Family Group Sheet by Paul D. Justis for James Wesley Justis, 1995)

"Jal, Lea County, New Mexico is the only town in Lea County named for a cattle brand. It was founded in 1910 by Charles Wesley Justis, a native of Virginia. Justis was a southern gentleman, possessing a great musical ability to sing. Why he moved to the sands of southern Lea County, having never ranched or farmed, remains a mystery. In 1910 Justis set up a mercantile store in Monument Draw one and a half miles southwest of the JAL Ranch headquarters, about six miles east of present-day Jal. He was appointed the first postmaster on July 6, 1910. At the time he filled out his postal application for a new post office, the dauntless entrepreneur indicated that about one hundred people would receive mail from his modest office."

Taken from "Lea County New Mexico, A Pictorial History" by Lynn C. Mauldin, page 83.

Census of 1880 for County of Kaufman, State of Texas, dated August 9, 1880, (see footnote for source information), shows Charles W. Justis, WM 31 years old, married, profession listed as a farmer, born in Virginia and his father was born in Virginia as well.

  9. Major William Justis was a Confederate Engineer. He was murdered in his place of business in 1905 during a robbery. (This according to his Great-grandson; Arthur Souther). Information from Paul D. Justis, Family Group Sheet for James Wesley Justis, 1995.

E-mail from Paul D. Justis dated 1/1/05 says:

Concerning Wiliam M. Justis (John's brother) according to the Confederate Pension application of William's widow, Georgie Sanford Justis -- William Marshall Justis died of Apoplexy which is the medical term for a Stroke. That would seem to contradict the assertion by Arthur Souther that he was murdered during a robbvery. Unless his Stroke was a result of the robbery? I do not have his exact death date, but notice below, James died in 1905; which is when Arthur Souther claimed Wm. was murdered.

James Lawson Justis died 12 Nov 1905 and is buried in the Stallard Cemetery, Culpeper Co., Va
